Preparation
Clear existing growth and rubble, break up compaction, and bring in topsoil where the existing profile is too poor or too shallow. Then level and set falls so water leaves the lawn rather than sitting in it.
- Remove weeds and rubble
- Rip or till compacted ground
- Amend with topsoil and compost
- Level, roll and check falls
Laying
Lay rolls tight with staggered joints, off a firm edge, working off boards rather than the fresh surface. Roll or press the lawn into contact with the soil — air gaps under a roll dry out and kill it.
The first three weeks
Water deeply and frequently at first, then reduce frequency and increase depth to draw roots down. Stay off it as much as possible, and delay the first cut until the lawn resists a gentle tug.
